Layout Properties

This page details the data displayed in the Property Editor for a Layout.

These properties allow you to define the dimensions of a Layout and guides for its place in an image sheet, ensuring your design is print-ready.

Name #

The title you assign to this layout for easy identification within your project.

Not to be confused with “File Name”.

File Name #

The actual name of the file on your local machine.

This is not editable from within Cocktail Card Designer.

Width & Height #

These fields represent the width and height of the sheet, in pixels.

These fields affect the viewable area of the Canvas, where the visual of the Layout is defined. Layers will be clipped beyond these bounds.

Bleed Area #

The size of the print margin that extends past the trim line, in pixels.

This area is intentionally cut off during printing to prevent white edges. Always extend background images/colors into this area.

This value should always be positive.

The following image is an example of best practice in setting Bleed line margins:

A screenshot of the Property Editor for a Layout, with adjustments made to Width, Height, and Bleed Area.
  • Bleed Area is set to “10”, which will expand the margins of the Layout by ten pixels in both width and height.
  • The desired size of the Layout is “1000 x 1000”. So, the Width and Height have manually been adjusted by the amount specified in Bleed Area to ensure that the desired size is accurate.
Show Bleed Line

Toggles the visibility of the “Bleed line on the Canvas.

The Bleed line indicates the outermost edge of your design that will be trimmed.

The following image is what the Bleed line will look like on the Canvas (with a background Layer for reference):

Safe Area #

The size of the inner margin, in pixels, where all critical content must be kept.

All important text, logos, and images should be kept inside this margin to avoid being trimmed off.

This line should typically be used in conjunction with the Bleed Area to ensure clean exports.

This value should always be positive.

Show Safe Line

Toggles the visibility of the “Safe line on the Canvas.

The Safe line indicates the innermost boundary for all critical design elements.

The following image is what the Safe line will look like on the Canvas (with a background Layer for reference):

Safe line with bleed line

The following image is what the Safe and Bleed lines look like on the Canvas together, with a background Layer for reference:

The best practice for Safe and Bleed areas used together is to ensure the Safe area anchors everything within the bounds of the Bleed Area:

  • NOTE: These values are not the recommended values, nor the recommended difference between areas, that should be applied to these fields. They are purely set example purposes. Use the margins that work best with your printing and cutting hardware.
Zoom #

Adjusts the viewing scale (z-level) of the Layout in the Canvas.

This property is for viewing convenience only and has no effect on the final sheet’s dimensions.

Orientation #

This setting affects how transformations in the Export Profile or Print options will interact with this Layout.

Portrait

Taller than wide.

Can not be rotated in any Export settings.

  • For example, this Layout has an area of “800 x 600” and has a Portrait orientation.
An “800 x 600” sized Layout with Portrait orientation.
  • When Printing a Data Source, there is an option for rotating Layouts.
The Print dialog for Cocktail Card Designer.
  • If there are Portrait-oriented Layouts that are printed, they will not be rotated and are only translated accordingly:

Landscape

Wider than tall.

Can be rotated in Export settings.

  • For example, this Layout has an area of “800 x 600” and has a Landscape orientation.
An “800 x 600” sized Layout with Landscape orientation.
  • When Printing a Data Source, there is an option for rotating Layouts.
